I spin and lift, spin and lift, to get a good attachment with plenty of goop under the nail head as there is around it. You're kinda like makin' a mudpie under the head. You can work the Liquid Nails a little bit too, once it's dried up some. This is actually a mapleleaf that had already dried a long time ago (see the rust on the nail), but it'll look just like this when you put it on your valve all fresh and new.

I let mine dry for at least 3 days to make sure it's as solid as it's going to get.
