The key to peak color under the seal is water. Soak your specimens before you clean them, keep them in water until you seal them. This way the periostracum is saturated before the sealant touches it, and with it, the color. If it takes awhile before you get to them, some scuzz may form, but it's easily just rinsed off under the tap.
